Facebook

viral marketingToday, I want to write a quick post to tell you about a really easy and effective strategy that I’ve been testing for getting more of your fans to interact with your brand on Facebook. Higher fan interaction is of course one of the most important factors in spreading your message on Facebook.

As you may know, Facebook loves images right now. You may have noticed that there are a lot more images ending up on your news feed lately.

I recently came across a Facebook page that has been growing tremendously using a strategy of sharing custom images on with their fans. If you check out the Facebook page for Wipeout Homophobia On Facebook you will see that they have grown to over 250,000 fans and a lot of that growth has come by posting creative images and encouraging their fans to share them.

However, it is important to note that in order for these images to be shared and go viral they need to convey a message that resonates with the core beliefs of the demographic group that you are targeting. The idea portrayed in the image can be political, religious or even sports related. It doesn’t matter, but it does need to be something that your target market is passionate about.

Here’s the example that first caught my eye…

Viral Facebook Strategy

According to some of the later post on their wall, it seems like this images was shared over 23,000 times (not to mention all the likes and comments that it got). You can see on their wall that they have created lots of similar images that also convey their core message and they continue to get lots of free exposure from all the people that share them with their friends.

One more important element of the success of these images is the Call To Action that gets placed in the image description when you post it. For this technique, I pretty much recommend that you just copy what they used, “Hit SHARE and the arrow will point to YOU on your wall…”

OK, so now you’re probably wondering if this strategy will work for your Facebook page as well.

I decided to test in on several of the pages that I run for my clients. You can see the results for yourself…

First, I created and posted the following image for the United with Israel Facebook page. On the first day, it received over 7,000 Shares (the most that any post on that page had ever received).

Next, I tested the strategy for Tactical Defense Gear and the results were AMAZING. In less that 5 days since I posted it, the image below has had over 19,000 Share, 5,000 Likes and 1,200 Comments. Not only that, but it also helped us to gain over 4,000 new Facebook fans and a few hundred email signups.

OK, so you got lots of fans for your Facebook page

Now What?

You may have noticed that the impressions that you get for each wall post are way less than the total number of fans that you have. And even worse… Most of those fans aren’t interacting with your post.

Raving FansAren’t these people supposed to be your Raving Fans? Well, the problem is that most of your fans probably aren’t even seeing your posts, so they can’t interact with you.

So, what can you do to increase your exposure and interaction among your Facebook fans?

There are 2 key elements to getting more impressions and interaction on Facebook

  1. Quality of posts
  2. Quantity of posts

The most important thing to realize is that more that people interact with your page and your posts, the more they will continue to see your posts (and the more likely that other fans will be to see your content). This is because Facebook uses an algorithm called EdgeRank to help them determine what information will be most interesting to a given user and as such, which information will be posted on each person’s news feed.

So, by posting quality content, you entice your fans to interact more. By posting more frequently (i.e. Quantity), you give them more opportunities to interact with you posts.

Now, let’s understand this a little deeper…

Quality Posts

In addition to getting your company’s message across with each post, you need to do what ever you can to encourage people to interact with you posts either by clicking like, sharing your content or by leaving a comment. When people interact they will be more likely to see you posts in the future AND because Facebook will think that your posts are quality, Facebook will show them to more other people as well.

For this reason, I always recommend that page administrators develop a posting strategy that that includes daily posts that are focused primarily on generating high user interaction (even if it doesn’t directly promote your brand’s message). Some simple ways to increase fan interaction are by posting pictures and videos and by asking questions in your posts.

If you can’t think of any way to get strong interaction out of people via your promotional posts, then you should develop a strategy for creating two types of posts.

  1. Promotional Posts – Posts that promote your business and the purpose of your Facebook page
  2. Fun/Interactive Posts – These posts serve the primary purpose of encouraging people to interact with your content

I recommend trying to keep the ratio here at about 4:1 (fun:promo). This accomplishes two goals. First, people come to look forward to your posts. And second, there will be more overall interaction with your posts (which of course leads to more impressions, which leads to more interaction, which leads to more impressions, etc, etc)

In another article I’ll give you some great tips for getting more interaction with you posts.

Quantity of Posts

This concept is a little simpler to understand. Simply put, the more you post quality content, the more opportunities your fans will have to interact with your brand.

Don’t be afraid of overdoing it on Facebook. You can easily post 3-5 times per day and as long most of that content is engaging and interesting, then your fans will love it.

At a minimum though, I recommend that you post at least one quality post to your page every day.

NOTE: If you are starting to get more fans joining your Facebook page, then you should start implement you posting strategy ASAP. If you wait too long to start giving them good content, then you might find that many of your fans will never see it because they haven’t interact with you in a long time.

are talking about thisRecently, Facebook has started displaying an “are talking about this” number underneath the fan count in the left column of each page. This number indicates how many people have engaged with your page in the last 7 days. I hope it is clear by now that by posting more quality content more often, you will be able to increase this number.
